Under a Tuscan Sun

Location: Ruimsig Country Estate, Ruimsig

The brief was to design an exterior space that would embody the spirit of the modern and clean-looking Tuscan Style home. Additional to this, was to design an extended entertainment space adjoining the existing patio.

The garden for this Tuscan-style home was developed around a strong Mediterranean/ Tuscan theme, incorporating hues of gray, blue / green and splashes of white, resulting in an uncluttered, harmonius feel throughout.

The Landscape designers at Engender opted to create a Contemporary and clean Outdoor composition. Following the brief, a vast area of composite deck was installed onto the existing patio, resulting in a sizeable Entertainment space. This further ensured a continuous flow between home and garden. A second level of decking, designed as a smaller, more intimate space, was also introduced, making this a unique, personalised space. Two sets of steps on either sides ensures efficient traffic flow between the spaces.

A Wooden- constructed Pergola forms the central focal point in the garden. This massive structure not only subdivides the garden into different garden rooms, but adds much needed stability to the design. In due time it will be fully covered with scented Star Jasmine creeper. The entire landscape follows a design around the rectangular shaped pergola. The straight, clean lines of the planter beds , give it a structural effect, edged off with cobble edging.

Custom designed Tuscan- styled pots on plinths, were strategically placed around the spacious garden, to create various focal points throughout. Repeated block planting patterns throughout, ensures a modern look and creates continuity in the garden.

Multi-layered hedges will ensure strong horizontal lines in the design, complementing the horizontal space /line of the pergola. A tropical planting scheme was introduced around the swimming pool area, bringing diversity into the landscape. In the corner of the garden, a Metal bench sits cosy underneath the shade of a Wild Olive tree, providing additional seating.

Engender created a majestic blend of an informal garden, with a touch of formal elements. This ensures a garden with a professional touch, and practical design, which adds value to the home as well as aesthetic appeal.
